Iranian drones struck the passenger terminal of an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region, marking the first reported spillover of the escalating Iran-related conflict into the South Caucasus.
According to Azerbaijani authorities, one drone hit the passenger terminal building at Nakhchivan International Airport, causing structural damage and disrupting airport operations. Another drone reportedly crashed near a nearby village, close to a school.
Officials said at least two civilians were injured in the incident and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Emergency teams were deployed to secure the site and assess damage to the airport infrastructure.
Azerbaijan condemns the strike
The Azerbaijani government condemned the attack and summoned Iran’s ambassador to lodge a formal protest, describing the strike as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law.
Officials in Baku said an investigation is underway to determine the type of drones used and how they entered Azerbaijani airspace.
Authorities also said Azerbaijan reserves the right to respond to the incident if necessary.
Strategic region near Iran
Nakhchivan is a landlocked Azerbaijani exclave bordering Iran, Turkey and Armenia, making it a strategically sensitive region.
The drone strike has raised concerns that the widening conflict involving Iran could spill beyond the Middle East into neighboring regions.
Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have been tense in recent years, particularly due to Azerbaijan’s close political and security ties with Israel.
Conflict widening
The attack comes as Iran continues to launch drone and missile strikes across the region following joint military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian facilities.
Security analysts warn that incidents like the Nakhchivan strike could signal the conflict expanding into new geographic areas, increasing the risk of broader regional instability.
Iran has not officially acknowledged carrying out the strike, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
