The United States Embassy in Islamabad and its consulates in Lahore and Karachi have suspended all official services on Monday, including visa processing and American Citizen Services, citing security concerns following nationwide protests.
In an official statement, the US Mission to Pakistan confirmed that all scheduled appointments had been cancelled as authorities imposed heightened security measures around diplomatic zones in major cities.
“US government personnel have been directed to restrict their movements until further notice,” the statement said, signaling an elevated threat environment.
The decision follows violent demonstrations on Sunday, including clashes near the US Consulate in Karachi and protests in Lahore and Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave. Authorities confirmed multiple casualties in Karachi after protesters attempted to breach the consulate’s perimeter, while several others were injured in confrontations with law enforcement in different cities.
Security has since been reinforced around foreign missions nationwide, with additional deployments of police and paramilitary forces.
The US Embassy urged American citizens in Pakistan to remain vigilant and monitor local media for updates.
“US citizens should observe good personal security practices, avoid large crowds, and ensure their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) registration is current,” the advisory stated.
Officials have not specified when regular consular operations will resume. Applicants are advised to monitor the embassy’s official website and communication channels for rescheduling information.
The closures underscore rising diplomatic sensitivities and security challenges amid escalating regional tensions.
