A couple found dead inside a locked car on Valentine’s Day has triggered a mystery, with police suspecting a murder suicide while the man’s family insists the pair may have been killed.
The victims, Rekha, 26, and Sumit, 32, had reportedly been in a relationship for about 15 years and were known to both families.
Scene inside the car
Residents alerted police after hearing gunshots. Officers discovered the man and woman unresponsive inside a locked vehicle, both with gunshot wounds.
Investigators recovered a pistol and cartridges from the car. The weapon was found in the man’s hand, forming the basis of the initial murder suicide theory. The bodies were sent for post-mortem while forensic teams examined the scene.
Police also confirmed the couple had been reported missing a day earlier.
Message raises questions
Authorities are analyzing a WhatsApp message allegedly written by Sumit shortly before the incident. In it, he reportedly mentioned their long relationship and claimed they planned to marry but suggested the woman was preparing to marry someone else.
Officials have not confirmed whether the message was sent or saved as a draft and say digital evidence is still being verified.
Family alleges foul play
Sumit’s relatives rejected the preliminary findings and alleged the couple may have been victims of violence linked to caste differences. They said threatening calls had been received earlier and questioned the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the car.
Family members said they had never opposed the relationship and that the woman had attended family events over the years.
Investigation continues
Police say all possibilities, including murder suicide and third-party involvement, remain under investigation as forensic and digital evidence is examined to determine how the 15 year relationship ended in tragedy.
