Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes on Wednesday after a Learjet 45 carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar crash-landed near Baramati airport in Pune district, killing all five people on board.
According to eyewitnesses, the aircraft appeared to lose control seconds before touchdown, plunging nearly 100 feet short of the runway before crashing and erupting into flames. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the wreckage scattered across an open field near the airport.
“I saw it with my own eyes,” a witness told news agency ANI. “When the aircraft descended, it seemed it would crash—and it did crash. It then exploded and there was a massive fire. Four to five more explosions followed.”
Locals rushed toward the burning wreckage in a desperate attempt to rescue passengers, but were forced back by intense heat and flames.
“People tried to pull the passengers out, but because the fire was too huge, they could not help,” the witness said. “Ajit Pawar was onboard and this is really painful for us. I can’t describe it in words.”
Video footage shared widely on social media captured dramatic visuals from the crash site, showing thick plumes of smoke and scattered debris as emergency responders arrived.
Officials later confirmed that all five people on board died in the crash.
Flight and Aircraft Details
The aircraft involved was a Learjet 45, a twin-engine business jet commonly used for chartered flights and VIP travel. Registered as VT-SSK, the jet was reportedly chartered from Mumbai and had taken off roughly one hour before the crash.
Airport officials said the Learjet veered off course while attempting to land at Baramati airport and crashed before reaching the runway, exploding on impact.
Nation’s Leaders Mourn
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic loss of life, mourning the demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. In a statement, he remembered Pawar as a mass leader with deep grassroots connections and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
Eyewitness Accounts Highlight Chaos
Another witness described multiple explosions after the crash: “This is really painful. When the aircraft descended, it seemed it would crash—and it did crash. It then exploded… After that, we rushed here and saw the aircraft on fire… four to five explosions again.”
Officials have cordoned off the crash site as emergency crews continue their work. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other aviation authorities are expected to launch a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.
At this time, authorities have not publicly released a preliminary cause for the incident. Investigators will examine flight data, maintenance records, weather conditions, and possible technical failures as part of the ongoing probe.
