US Rep. Ilhan Omar was attacked Tuesday night during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis when a man rushed toward the stage and sprayed an unknown substance from a syringe in her direction, authorities said.
The suspect was identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, who was tackled by security personnel and later arrested by Minneapolis police on a charge of third-degree assault. Officials said the syringe appeared to contain an amber-colored liquid. Several people at the event reported a strong, unpleasant odor, described as similar to vinegar or ammonia.
Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota, was speaking to constituents when the man approached from the front row, shouting remarks that were not clearly audible before spraying the substance toward her upper body. Video footage showed Omar briefly stepping toward the man before he was restrained and removed from the venue.
Police said Omar was not injured. Despite advice from aides to seek medical attention, she returned to the podium within minutes and continued her remarks, telling the audience they would not be deterred by the disruption.
Later, Omar said on social media that she was “okay” and would not be intimidated. She described herself as a survivor and thanked supporters for their solidarity.
The incident drew swift condemnation from leaders of both major political parties. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said she strongly disagreed with Omar politically but stressed that violence against elected officials is unacceptable. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also denounced the attack, praising law enforcement for responding quickly.
U.S. Capitol Police said they are working with local and federal authorities to ensure the suspect faces appropriate charges and to deter similar incidents. Forensic teams processed the scene, and investigators are examining the substance used in the attack.
The assault comes at a time of heightened political tensions in the United States and growing concerns over the safety of lawmakers. Capitol Police reported that threats and concerning behavior directed at members of Congress increased for the third consecutive year in 2025, with nearly 15,000 cases reviewed.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.
