Allama Iqbal Open University Launches Expanded Science Education System Nationwide

Islamabad — Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has officially expanded its science education system, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s distance learning landscape. Established in May 1974, AIOU initially focused on education, social sciences, arts, and humanities, providing access to learners who could not attend traditional campuses. With this new initiative, the university has formalized a comprehensive science education framework, making scientific learning accessible and flexible for students across Pakistan. The Faculty of Sciences, originally founded in 1982 with five departments, now forms the backbone of this modernized system.

Over the years, AIOU has steadily expanded its science offerings to meet modern demands. New departments and programs now include computer science, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, engineering and technology, statistics, nutritional sciences, and environmental design. In 1988, the Department of Science Education was established under the Faculty of Education to train science teachers nationwide, offering BEd to PhD programs. These developments highlight AIOU’s extensive experience in creating a structured, research-oriented, and practical approach to science education.

In recent years, the university introduced BS, MSc, MPhil, and PhD-level programs in advanced scientific fields, including physics and research-intensive disciplines. AIOU’s science system now serves as a major pillar of its mission, reducing barriers to science careers, empowering students, and meeting Pakistan’s national development needs. By combining traditional learning with innovative, accessible approaches, AIOU continues to nurture skilled scientists, educators, and professionals.
