Pakistan’s mobile phone imports have surged dramatically, crossing Rs 229 billion in just the first five months of FY2025–26. According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, imports rose 40.5 percent to 801.1 million dollars between July and November, compared to 570.2 million dollars last year. November alone showed an increase of 4.8 percent year-on-year and 8.3 percent from October, highlighting rising consumer demand. This surge reflects growing adoption of smartphones, fueled by digital payments, online work, and social media use nationwide.
While imports rose, local mobile phone assembly showed mixed trends. November’s local production increased by 8 percent to 2.49 million units; however, cumulative production for 2025 declined 3 percent to 27.6 million units. Smartphones accounted for 53 percent of locally assembled devices, signaling a clear consumer preference for smart technology over basic handsets. Local brands like Infinix (3.47 million units), VGO Tel, and Vivo continued to dominate, offering budget-friendly options and contributing significantly to the mobile ecosystem. Analysts suggest that Pakistan’s mobile market is experiencing both rapid growth and a shift toward higher-value devices, showing how smartphones are central to the country’s digital economy.
To strengthen the sector, the government finalized a draft Mobile and Electronic Device Manufacturing Policy (2026–33), aiming to boost local production, reduce imports, and generate jobs. The policy emphasizes skills development, investment incentives, and technology transfer to create a sustainable mobile ecosystem in Pakistan. Experts believe that effective implementation will gradually lower dependence on imported devices, support local brands, and enhance affordability for consumers.
The MediaBites Team congratulates policymakers, industry leaders, and local manufacturers for fostering growth in Pakistan’s mobile industry, advancing technology adoption, and supporting economic resilience.
