For a while now, Google users have relied on adding “Reddit” to their search queries to find valuable resources related to specific questions. However, this approach became less effective when several Reddit forums went offline due to a protest against the platform’s decision to charge developers for data access. As a result, many search results became inaccessible or unhelpful, making it difficult for users to find the information they needed.
To tackle this issue, Google has introduced a new feature called Perspectives, which was announced on Monday. This feature, available on the mobile web and the Google app in the US, includes a Perspectives tab that provides users with access to discussion forums and videos from popular social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and Quora.
During an all-hands meeting earlier this month, Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s Senior Vice President in charge of Search, acknowledged the frustrations expressed by users and assured them that the company was actively working to enhance search results. Raghavan mentioned that Google aims to provide users with helpful resources without the explicit need to include “Reddit” in their searches.
Google is actively modernizing its search capabilities to remain competitive and leverage the latest advancements in generative artificial intelligence. As part of this effort, Google unveiled its Search Generative Experience project during its annual developer conference in May. Although not yet accessible to all users, this project aims to provide more comprehensive and insightful results driven by generative AI technology.
Furthermore, Google introduced Bard earlier this year, which competes with ChatGPT. However, Bard operates independently from search and is still in the experimental phase.
