RIYADH (Sept. 17, 2025) — Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday signed a landmark joint strategic defense agreement, signaling the beginning of a new era in Riyadh–Islamabad relations.
The accord, inked at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh, declares that any aggression against either country will be treated as an aggression against both, and aims to deepen defense cooperation, enhance deterrence, and ensure regional stability.
Diplomatic observers say the agreement underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing reliance on Pakistan’s military strength at a time when Riyadh’s traditional trust in Washington has eroded. The Israeli strike on Qatar earlier this year and the interception of a hostile missile near Masjid-e-Nabvi were seen as turning points, raising questions about U.S. reliability as a security guarantor in the Gulf.
Pakistan, with its seasoned armed forces and historic defense ties with Saudi Arabia, is now positioned as a critical partner in Riyadh’s security calculus. The pact also reflects Islamabad’s desire to reassert itself as a stabilizing force in the Muslim world, while cementing its decades-long bond with the Kingdom.
During his visit, Sharif received a warm welcome from the crown prince, with both leaders emphasizing the historic and strategic depth of their relationship. The prime minister conveyed greetings to King Salman and expressed gratitude for Saudi hospitality, reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to the Kingdom’s security and prosperity.
Analysts note that the defense pact could redefine regional alignments, especially as private signals from Riyadh suggest a recalibration of its dependency on Western defense guarantees.
