British police say the number of alleged victims in the sexual offences probe against the late Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed has climbed to 146, a sharp rise from previous updates.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the figure in a statement, saying both men and women have recently come forward with allegations, including rape. The investigation, launched in November last year, is also probing whether any individuals facilitated or enabled Al Fayed’s abuse, and whether misconduct or corruption played a role.
Al Fayed, an Egyptian-born billionaire and father of Dodi Al Fayed — who died alongside Princess Diana in the 1997 Paris car crash — was a household name in the UK. He owned London’s iconic Harrods department store from 1985 to 2010.
Initial reports in September 2024 recorded just 21 complainants. By November, that number had grown to 90. Now, police say the scale is far greater, urging anyone with information to come forward.
The ABC reported last year that at least six Australians are among the accusers. At one point, more than 420 people had contacted lawyers with various allegations about Al Fayed.
Some civil claims against his estate have already been settled by Harrods’ new owners. Al Fayed died in 2023 at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy marked by wealth, controversy, and now a mounting catalogue of abuse allegations.
Police stress that the investigation remains “live” and are appealing to potential witnesses globally.
