Virginia Giuffre, a prominent voice in the fight against sex trafficking and the woman who accused Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her while she was a minor under Jeffrey Epstein’s control, has tragically died by suicide, her family confirmed in a public statement on Friday.
“We are devastated beyond words,” the family said. “Virginia was a warrior, a loving mother, and a brave survivor who fought for justice not just for herself but for countless others.”
Who Was Virginia Giuffre?
Virginia Giuffre, née Roberts, rose to international attention as one of the most outspoken survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trafficked as a teenager, she claimed she was abused by Epstein and his close associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and in a now-famous allegation, accused Prince Andrew, Duke of York, of sexually abusing her on multiple occasions between 2001 and 2002 — allegations Prince Andrew has strenuously denied.
The Lawsuit & Settlement
In 2021, Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew in the United States. In early 2022, the case was settled out of court, with Prince Andrew agreeing to pay an undisclosed sum. The settlement did not include an admission of guilt, and Prince Andrew has continuously maintained his innocence, saying he “regrets his association with Epstein” but denies any wrongdoing.
Virginia’s Advocacy
Following her case, Giuffre became a global advocate for victims of sex trafficking, founding an organization to support survivors and pushing for stricter laws and global awareness. She was praised by many in the human rights community for her courage and persistence.
Prince Andrew’s Response
As of now, the British royal family has not issued an official statement. A spokesperson for Prince Andrew said he was “saddened” by the news and would not be making further comment out of respect for the family.
