    Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has strongly defended Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami after the fast bowler was criticized for drinking water during a match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Some online critics targeted Shami for not fasting during Ramadan, questioning his religious commitment.

    Javed Akhtar hit back at the detractors and calling them “bigoted idiots” emphasizing that an athlete’s performance and fitness should take priority over such criticism.

    “Cricket is about skill and is not unnecessary religious policing,” he remarked in a social media post adding that Shami’s dedication to the game speaks for itself.
