In today’s world, it’s common to hear complaints about the younger generation. Many elders feel that young people lack manners, respect, and values that earlier generations held dear.
Every generation seems to think the one after them is less respectful less disciplined or simply not as good as they were. Interestingly when these elders were young their parents likely had similar complaints about them! This dynamic, often called the “generation gap,” is a natural part of human progress. One might argue that this gap is essential for society to grow and evolve.
Anchor and renowned journalist, Rauf Klasra shared this piece on his Facebook wall:
A few days ago I experienced such a surprise at a local gym. A tall handsome young man was about to walk through the door ahead of me. As soon as he noticed me he stopped, stepped aside and said, “After you.” I insisted that he go first but he firmly declined and politely gestured for me to proceed.
While this might seem like a small everyday act it stood out to me because such gestures are becoming increasingly rare especially in our society. In many cases opening the door for someone or stepping aside is perceived as a sign of weakness or unnecessary formality rather than a mark of respect.
Curious I asked the young man his name. He introduced himself as Faizan Haider. Upon further inquiry I learned that he is the son of Sardar Salim Haider the Governor of Punjab. It was clear to me that his parents had done an excellent job raising him instilling in him values of respect and courtesy.
This encounter made me reflect on the contrast between his behavior and the general perception of privilege. In our society it’s uncommon to see the children of high-ranking officials or famous individuals demonstrating such humility and respect. Yet here was someone who defied the stereotype.
Someone once wisely said that you can judge a person’s character through their small everyday actions. Grand gestures can often be staged or fake but genuine respect and kindness reveal themselves in these seemingly minor moments.
This young man’s simple act of politeness left a lasting impression reminding us that values like respect humility and good manners never go out of style.
