LAHORE: The Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday defended his wife’s overseas property investment by calling for a probe into offshore holdings that are illegal. Naqvi’s remarks come as the aftermath of the Dubai Leaks, which revealed more than 23,000 properties in Dubai owned by Pakistanis.
Mohsin Naqvi clarified that his wife owned a property in Dubai between 2017 and 2023 and she is also the owner of property in London. Moreover, the taxes of all these properties were paid. “Since I am a businessman, I will put my money in places I want,” Mohsin Naqvi said, stressing the legality of his investment. He demanded the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate those who have taken possession of offshore properties illegally.
The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project had the Dubai Leaks which listed his wife as the owner of the property of a considerable value. Naqvi stressed that investing abroad legally is not a crime as long as it is done transparently. He observed, “I am aware of so many media houses with properties in Dubai. If these investments are made legally, there should be no problem. “
In the face of strong opposition from social media, Naqvi continued to emphasise commitment to service delivery. He claimed that encouraging businessmen, as has been done in India, will play a key role in Pakistan’s economic development. With further concerns, Mr. Naqvi stated that the matter of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur’s political statement about seizing the state building will be looked into promptly.
