Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, found himself in hot water as India’s financial police arrested him on Thursday concerning allegations of kickbacks associated with a now-defunct alcohol policy implemented in the Indian capital.

The Enforcement Directorate, India’s federal financial crimes police, took action against Kejriwal following claims that his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had received illicit payments from alcohol companies to enact favorable policies in Delhi. Despite being summoned nine times for interrogation, Kejriwal’s arrest raises significant political implications, especially with national elections on the horizon.

As a key ally of the Congress-led INDIA alliance, competing against the National Democratic Alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal’s arrest fuels allegations of governmental misuse of investigative agencies for political gains. Several AAP leaders, including Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia, have also faced incarceration over the alleged scandal.

The arrest occurred shortly after the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal’s plea for protection against arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. AAP leaders maintain Kejriwal’s innocence and assert his ability to continue governing from jail.

The controversial alcohol policy, aimed at privatizing the alcohol business in 2021 to boost revenue and curb the black market, faced termination following corruption allegations. Kejriwal’s repeated summons and subsequent arrest amidst accusations of governmental interference further amplify tensions in Indian politics.
