The Federal Education Ministry of Pakistan has banned two Cambridge textbooks, Sociology by Jonathan Blundell and The History and Culture of Pakistan by Nigel Kelly, due to their LGBTQ content and misrepresentation of Pakistan’s map.
The Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) has directed all educational institutions in the federal capital to stop printing, publishing, distributing, and teaching these books. The ban has been imposed because the books lack a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Curriculum Wing and contain material against Pakistan’s socio-cultural values.
The management of educational institutions must ensure that these books are not available to students, and an implementation report must be submitted by May 10. The Sociology book has been banned for its content on same-sex marriage, while the second book has been banned for its misprinted map and the incorrect description of Pakistan’s political history.
PEIRA has warned of legal action under Section Four A of the PEIRA Act against violators. The notification has been sent to all private educational institutions in the federal capital.
