A helicopter crash in the west coast Canadian province of British Columbia resulted in three fatalities and serious injuries to four individuals during a recreational skiing outing.
The incident occurred near Terrace, a town in the Skeena region, Canada with the helicopter going down in a remote location accessible only by helicopter.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the helicopter, part of a heli-skiing operation with seven people on board, crashed about 70 miles east of the Alaska border.
Authorities plan to investigate the crash site on Tuesday. The injured were treated at the scene and transported to Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace. The tour operator, Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, is collaborating with authorities to investigate the incident, acknowledging the inherent risks associated with heli-skiing in mountainous and backcountry environments.
A spokesperson from the skiing company stated, “The company takes every precaution to minimize the risks while being in the backcountry. However, similar to many outdoor activities, it’s impossible to eliminate 100 percent of the risks posed,” the spokesperson said.
