Due to concern about societal criticism and disgrace, a young mother in New Delhi sadly took the life of her 6-day-old daughter in a tragic event.
Shivani, 28, and already a mother of four daughters, was overwhelmed by the thought of raising a fifth girl following the birth of her fourth child.
Shivani decided to kill her newborn child out of fear of the shame and financial responsibilities that would come with having multiple daughters.
While she was nursing, she choked her daughter to death and then disposed of the body by throwing it on her neighbor’s rooftop.
Shivani initially reported her daughter missing, but police found her story somewhat dubious during their investigation. Ultimately, she confessed to the crime, claiming societal and family pressures were the main factors for her actions.
Unfortunately, this case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for supports and services to families, particularly those with many daughters. It demonstrates the catastrophic precedents of financial insecurity and fear of judgment onto families.
Shivani’s arrest and murder charge illustrate a lack of understanding and compassion, and again, better support of families with multiple daughters could have mitigated these tragic circumstances.
