A deepfake video of Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli surfaced on social media as misuses of Artificial Intelligence technology mount.
The video surfaced on X on August 27 and had been viewed over 300,000 times; it shows Kohli falsely venting over fellow cricketer Shubman Gill while bragging about his own achievements.
The video manufactured seems to show Kohli appearing to doubt Gill’s abilities: “I am watching Shubman Gill quite closely. He is talented, no doubt, but there is a big difference between being a good cricketer and a legend.”
At this point, the manipulated version of Virat Kohli speaks highly about himself in this video, stating that throughout the world, only one is Virat Kohli, and that he has faced all the challenges in cricket and has come out victorious in most during the last decade or more.
But social media users were quick to peg the video as a deepfake, bringing to light the possible hazards associated with AI technology. Many commented on the fact that it would suck if Kohli were confident or self-assured, because one way or another, he would never humiliate another player this badly.
The incident has underlined the ever-growing threat of deepfake technology, as it is used in not just cyberattacks but also in the creation of misleading, injurious content in the physical world.
This is allegedly how the video went viral so fast, serving as a very strong reminder that there will be an increasing need for vigilance and awareness when consuming and sharing online content.
