KARACHI – Personnel of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) assaulted News One TV journalist Shaukat Korai in the premises of Sindh High Court on April 27.
The Pakistan Press Foundation reported that the journalist was making footage of suspects brought for hearing.
However, a CTD officer approached Korai and told him he was not allowed to make footage and insisted that he delete it.
The journalist pointed out that the High Court had permitted them to cover the events on its premises.
He was then surrounded by some other CTD officers, who snatched his cell phone and tried to take him to the station. His clothes were also torn off by the officers.
In another important news, Journalist Shahzeb Jillani’s interim pre-arrest bail was confirmed on Tuesday by a district court in an alleged case relating to cyber terrorism and defamation. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered the case against Jillani. The charges relate to his appearance on the ‘Aaj Kamran Khan Show’ on March 18 where he spoke about the enforced disappearances allegedly carried out by the military.
He was also charged over a tweet he published highlighting the allegations of political engineering by a Pakistan Army general. Dawn.com reported that the district and sessions judge (South) Imdad Hussain Khoso pronounced his verdict, which was reserved last week after hearing arguments from Jillani’s counsel and FIA prosecutor on his application for bail confirmation. The judge confirmed the interim bail, granted to the journalist against a surety bond of Rs100,000, Dawn said.
