Minutes after the federal government’s decision to replace Punjab police chief Tahir Khan with Amjad Javed Saleemi on Tuesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stepped in and suspended the move, citing as its reason the by-polls scheduled for October 14.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed head of the National Commission for Police Reforms, Nasir Khan Durrani, also resigned from his post on Tuesday.
Media reports suggested that Durrani took the decision in response to the transfer of Punjab IGP Tahir Khan.
Earlier, the Establishment Division had issued a notification to appoint Amjad Saleemi as the IG of the Police Department in the Punjab. The announcement came only a month and two days after the appointment of Khan, who has also served as the IGP in Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa.
Some resources confirm that Speaker Punjab Assembly, Chauhdry Pervaiz Elahi was not happy with Tahir Khan, IG Punjab for not listening to his demands of new appointments.
Senior Journalist Mohammad Malick shared this news on social media:
‘IG Punjab was changed cause he resisted pressure from Mr. Pervez Elahi and chief secretary Punjab to make certain appointments’
‘Talk of Nasir Durrani resigning on health issues is BS. He quit cause he wanted IG Tahir to stay and supported his principled stance’
Chauhdry Pervaiz Elahi was in very good terms with newly appointed IGP, Amjad Javed Saleemi during his tenure as CM Punjab. Sources confirm that Chauhdry Pervaiz Elahi convinced PM, Imran Khan during his visit to Lahore on weekend for the removal of IGP. The big surprising factor in this saga is CM Punjab Usman Buzdar, who was not even in confidence for this big move of the province.
The other factor is the arrest of Provincial Minister Mehmood Ul Rasheed’s son in Gulberg Lahore; which highlighted on all media and brought a bad name to the Govt. of Punjab. PTI’s top leadership was not happy the way Punjab police handled this episode and IG police were under the radar for not cooperating with the GOP.
If the above-mentioned factors are the true factors for the removal of IG Police Punjab; then this is really a bad move by the PTI Government. This incident didn’t appreciate not only by opposition parties but also PTI itself.
