Award winner documentary for public awareness by social activist Zawahar Butt on Thalassemia has highly received appreciation from its viewers. Thalassemia is a disease which occurs due to the mutation in hemoglobin. At least 20% of global population is estimated to carry a+ Thalassemia and around 1.1% couples worldwide are at the risk of having children affected with Hemoglobin disorder. Pakistan is also not an exception for Thalassemia patients. Estimated 5000-9000 children are reported to be affected with β-thalassemia every year which is almost a formidable challenge to country’s population.
The social awareness documentary on Thalassemia also exposes social taboos related to Thalassemia. Like, the documentary aimed at bringing attention to social taboos received wide acclaim and went viral on social media.
The documentary reveals the misconceptions related to Thalassemia in Pakistan’s urban and rural population. The stigma attached to women because of a Thalassemia birth is increasing the divorce rate in the country. This supposed stereotype in our cultures holds the women responsible for the abnormal birth, rather than seeking actual scientific remedy.
The documentary is also a critique on Pakistani society where scientific reasoning and logic are undermined in the name of culture and religion. The documentary seeks to sensitize people about our collective failure in recognizing problems and seek solutions for it.
The documentary was hailed by other social activists through their tweets.
