American researchers have shattered the illusion of bottled water to be the pure water. Bottled water is making at least $100 billion per year. Selling water through private companies was observed in 1760, in America, by Jackson spa company for the ‘therapeutic uses’ later on different other companies took the idea and started selling water widely across the globe. It has been found through research that every year the consumption of bottled water in increasing 10% every year. Besides china, America is consuming most packaged water from private wells.
A recent report suggests that more than half of the bottled water comes from the tap and only goes through few tests of safety. Pepsi and nestles in 2007 changed their bottled water labels to Auqafina and pure life respectively which better reflects its reality.
However, tap water is tested to prevent contamination and ensure safety more frequently than packaged water and unlike the private sold water, environmental protection agency takes the responsibility of conducting safety tests of tap water. Still the quality of tap water varies given that consumers are entitled to get drinking water report annually from EPA.
Those who regularly intake bottled water should also rethink on continuing it because in 2011, a report on drinking water found that 13% of the private wells at least one element either arsenic or uranium at a concentration that exceeds the standard national guide.
And to the disappointment of bottled water users the research at Boston university concluded that tap water and bottled water even tastes the same as many of the students failed to tell the difference between them. So preferring bottled water over tap water is neither economical nor it is healthy.
