Pakistani film ‘Saawan’ inspired from a true story of polio-stricken child was planned to be feature in Cinema of the World section at the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The film is directed by Farhan Alam while the story line is given by Mashood Qadri.
On October 26, 2017 Saawan filmmaker Farhan Alam received an official letter from Festival Director Sunit Tandon stating that “the festival was honored to present the film in the Cinema of the World section.” On the pretext of invitation letter Alam shipped all the necessary equipment called Digital Cinema Package (DCP) However, on 4th November, 2017 Alam received an apology e-mail from the festival director stating that due to ‘scheduling constraints’ some titles which were originally decided to showcase is not possible now. While it also mentioned that immediate and appropriate arrangements will be made to return the DCP safely.
Alam responded to this back shift of IFFI saying, “It was very disappointing and heartbreaking for me to hear this news as I was looking forward to attend this festival.”
Saawan has appeared in different film festivals and has won many tittles as well. Like best foreign language film award in Madrid, Spain; best film and best director awards in Vico Equense, Italy; best film & best music award in Tricase, Italy; and. most recently, best foreign language film in Alexandria, Virginia at the Alexandria Film Festival.
Nevertheless, festival director has been contacted for an official explanation of non-inclusion of Saawan. His response is awaited.
