Team MediaBites has decided to make stories of problems and issues going on in the Government, Semi- Government and institutions affiliated to the Government; with the aim of bringing genuine concerns under the consideration of high authorities, so that immediate action could be taken. The following story is the first one in the chain of coming stories.
The topic of Institutions versus Individuals is very important and many of the debates around this topic concludes that both are dependent on each other. For the nations’ prosperity both Institutions and Individuals need to be synchronized in a way that one should complement the other. But in the case of General Hospital of Lahore the synchronization has been disturbed after the appointments of heads of the only neuro-surgical hospital in Pakistan were made from medicines and other fields instead of someone from the field of neurosurgery. Pakistan Institute of neurosurgery (PINS) is Asia’s biggest neurosurgery hospital and world’s third big in terms of beds.
From the time the reins of the institution are given to people other than neurosurgery field the institution is facing a decline. In order to fulfill personal vested interests these principals and Medical Superintendents tried to built some other departments which were stopped by the intervention of Lahore High Court.
The chief Justice diverted the attention of CM Pujab Shahbaz Shareef to take into account the potential problems that can jeopardize his vision of building exemplary neuro-hospital. CM initiated the phase 2 of the hospital and up till now around 25 million rupees have been invested while in pretext of phase 3, one Billion rupees budget has been allocated along 10 kanals of land for extension which would be able to accommodate 2/3rd of the total patients of the country.
But the sad thing is that under the leadership of current principal the hospitals’ world famous image is in danger. There are only 20 rooms whose OPD is affiliated to neurology department with no private rooms. There are 700 doctors working in the hospital fr whom only one hostel is rendered so many of the doctors are forced to live outside the hospital’s hostel. Angiography machine has already completed its life time but is still on work. The hospital also now lacks the important equipment necessary for the treatment of cancer and tumors like pet scan. Out of 20 ventilators only one is working. There are many other problems as well.
The point is according to the 2006 plan the General Hospital of Lahore should be made autonomous and Individuals should not be allowed to take over the institutions and also the principal and MS should be some retired neurosurgeons so they could see the affairs of the hospital using their experience in best possible way.
