Islamabad: unfortunately the death toll of the fire at the Awami Markaz Building rises to three, a day after Umar Ejaz Malik plunged from his window in attempt to survive the flame he passed away in hospital.
Onlookers tried to catch him but they failed, the 23 year old breathed his last at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) raising the total death toll to three.
Doctors had told us on Monday that he was clinically dead but had shifted him onto respirators to keep him alive,” Malik Tariq, a cousin of Ejaz, told The Express Tribune.
“He was in critical condition with a head injury, abdominal injuries and a number of fractures,” Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said.
“He was a brilliant student and had passed his BBA from Bahria University with distinction,” Tariq said, adding that while studying for his MBA, he used to work nights at a private IT company inside the Awami Markaz along with his friend Ali Raza.
Sadly, Raza also lost his life when he jumped from the fourth floor of the building.
The third victim Waqar decided to stay inside and passed away due to suffocation.
Bystanders say the fire brigade showed up three hours later although the government states it took them an hour.
As reported by Express Tribune, “It was also reported that records belonging to China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) were destroyed in the fire but a tweet from Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria laid these claims to rest. He clarified that there was a small research unit at the markaz which was digitally backed up at Planning, Development and Reforms Division, hence no data was lost.”
