Forbes released it’s list of highest earning celebrities and it reflected a devastating reality of the gender pay gap within Hollywood.
Sean Combs AKA P. Diddy topped the list as the highest-earning celebrity, even though Diddy is no longer a rapper he earned over $130 million over the past 12 months, his source of income remains his record company ‘Bad Boy Records’ his record company includes renowned signees such as Bow Wow, Elephant Man and Faith Evans to name a few of many, his total wealth adds up to $820 million thanks to a North American headline tour last year.
Just behind P.Diddy is the beautiful lemonade star Beyonce, her overall wealth accumulated to be £105 million, she can thank her lucrative tour ‘Formation’ and her superhit song Lemonade for the sum. Celebrity couple Jay Z and beyonce are expecting their second children later this year, which happen to be twins they are already parents of a little girl Blue Ivy Carter. Jay Z came in at 55.
Author JK Rowling stood at 3rd place with $95 million, having released Harry Potter and the Cursed Child last year, along with writing the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Drake is close behind JK Rowling with $94 million, mainly thanks to touring, while Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo ($93 million) rounds off the top five.
Only 16% of the list was accumulated by women which is surprisingly low, last year it was 15%, this reflects the inequality withing the entertainment industry. Playing alongside Ashton Kutcher in “No Strings Attached”, Natalie Portman has revealed in an interview that has thrown her voice into the gender pay debate, revealing that she was once paid considerably less than Kutcher in a movie, to which Kutcher agreed.
Cumulatively, the top women made $822.5 million, down from the $892.5 million of last year.
“Notably, not one female actor made the list, whereas ten male actors did, including Adam Sandler, Jackie Chan, Kevin Heart, and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. Jennifer Lawrence almost made the cut, but due to only being paid for one mainstream feature Red Sparrow in the last 12 months, fell below the lowest of the 100.”
