Just when the debate was raging, an old video of Priyanka Chopra praising Azan went viral. In the video, Priyanka, who’s arguably the most successful female Bollywood actor today, is seen describing Azaan time as her ‘favourite time.’
In the video, which is from a Bhopal promotional event for Priyanka’s 2016 film Jai Gangaajal, the actor is asked what her favourite time of the day is. She replies by saying that when she packs up her shoot for the day, she likes to sit on her terrace where the azaan from as many as six nearby mosques can be heard at sunset.
“I really like those five minutes. The sun is setting and the azaan can be heard on the microphone (loudspeaker). It’s a strange, peaceful time. It’s my favourite time of the day,” she says.
Many of the actor’s fans are now sharing the video on Twitter and Facebook, asking Sonu to ‘learn from Priyanka’.
Sonu tweeted his displeasure about being woken up by the sound of azaan, the Muslim call to prayers, from a neighbouring mosque. “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India,” Nigam had tweeted.
He argued for an end to the use of public address systems and even said that there was no electricity in the times of the Prophet.
After being trolled, Nigam clarified by saying that he isn’t only against mosques’ use of loudspeakers but that by temples and gurudwaras as well.
